May 21, 2026 (Sundown): Religion: The
History Of Religion: Abrahamic Religions: Judaism: The History Of
Judaism: Moses: The Law of Moses (Hebrew: Torat Moshe) (The Mosaic
Law): The Three Annual Festivals: (The Three Pilgrimage Festivals
[Hebrew: Shalosh Regalim, "Three Journeys By Foot, Three
Pilgrimages"]): The Festival of Harvest (Hebrew: Shavuot,
"Weeks'): -- The Hebrew holiday of Shavuat begins at sundown
on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan, and lasts until
sundown two more days of the Gregorian calendar in the Jewish
diaspora, for a total of two days in the Hebrew calendar and three
days in the Gregorian calendar. In Exodus 23:14 of the Torah,
Moses recounts what he had been commanded by THE LORD to convey to
his people: "Each year you must celebrate three festivals in
my honor." Of the second of these festivals, it goes on to
say in Exodus 23:16: "Second, celebrate The Festival Of
Harvest, when you bring me the first crops of your harvest."
Shavuot marked the wheat harvest in the Land of Israel in the
Hebrew Bible according to Exodus 34:22. In addition, rabbinic
tradition teaches that the date also marks the revelation of the
Ten Commandments to Moses and the Israelites at Mount Sinai,
which, according to the tradition of Orthodox Judaism, occurred at
this date in 1312 BCE. The word Shavuot means "weeks" in
Hebrew, and marks the conclusion of the Counting of the Omer. Its
date is directly linked to that of Passover; the Torah mandates
the seven-week Counting of the Omer, beginning on the second day
of Passover, to be immediately followed by Shavuot. This counting
of days and weeks is understood to express anticipation and desire
for the giving of the Torah. On Passover, the people of Israel
were freed from their enslavement to Pharaoh; on Shavuot, they
were given the Torah and became a nation committed to serving God.
While Shavuot is sometimes referred to as Pentecost (in Koine
Greek: Pentecoste, "Fiftieth") due to its timing fifty
days after the first day of Passover, it is not the same
celebration as the Christian Pentecost or Whitsun, which comes
fifty days after Easter. That said, the two festivals are related,
as the first Day of Pentecost, related in the Acts of the
Apostles, is said to have happened on Shavuot. Shavuot is
traditionally celebrated in Israel for one day, where it is a
public holiday, and for two days in the diaspora. On Sale @ 15%

May 21: Eat More Fruits And Vegetables
Day: -- The perfect time for the availability of all our favorite
fresh fruits and vegetables. We believe including fresh fruits and
veggies in the diet is necessary for a healthy life. Eat More
Fruits And Vegetables Day is dedicated to a cause. The increase in
obesity and lifestyle diseases among American people is a major
concern nowadays. This is a day to remind us of the importance of
fresh food, which helps us lead a healthy life. Ever wondered who
started the cultivation and farming of vegetables and fruits? We
only have a vague idea about the start of cultivation. We know we
used to forage for nuts and fruits as far back as 1,00,000 years
ago. During that time, our ancestors observed that the seeds they
threw away created new plants. The understanding that we could
manipulate plant growth was perhaps one of the greatest
discoveries of the ancient world. Most scientists agree that
proper cultivation started only around 30,000 years ago.
Initially, farming was a concept associated with grains and
cereals. However, the practice soon expanded to include fruits and
vegetables as well. Fruits and vegetables are good sources of
necessary vitamins and minerals. There are records of Romans using
greenhouses to cultivate vegetables and fruits. The vegetables and
fruits available nowadays are different from their ancient
counterparts. Selective breeding for nutrition and edible quantity
changed the shape, color, and even the taste for the better. But
today, the trend has changed as we all opt for fast food. This
decision contributes to the obesity crisis and the formation of
deadly lifestyle diseases. The growing number of people affected
by unhealthy eating caused the Dole Food Company to take action.
They created this holiday to educate the world about healthy
eating and spread awareness about conditions such as obesity. On

May 21: International Tea Day: -- On this
day, tea lovers unite in celebration of their favorite beverage.
International Tea Day also promotes ways to sustain the production
and consumption of tea. On this day, we can also learn of the
importance of tea in combating hunger and poverty. You might be
surprised to know that tea is the most loved beverage for millions
worldwide. Every second, people consume 25,000 cups of tea,
meaning more than two billion cups of tea are consumed per day! In
2005, tea-producing countries came together to celebrate
International Tea Day. These countries were Sri Lanka, Nepal,
Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, and Uganda. In 2019, the
Intergovernmental Group on Tea decided to celebrate International
Tea Day on May 21. The U.N. said yes to the celebrations on
December 21, 2019. The first official U.N. International Tea Day
was celebrated on May 21, 2020. Projections show that as the world
population increases, so will the number of tea drinkers. Tea
enjoys great popularity in India and China. These two countries
alone account for 37% of the world's total population, meaning a
substantial number of tea lovers reside in India and China.
According to legend, Emperor Shen Hung of China discovered tea
when leaves from a tree blew into his pot of boiling water. He
loved the hot liquid and humanity has not looked back ever since.
Besides drinking it for taste, there are quite a few health
benefits of tea drinking. Tea contains antioxidants that reduce
the risk of heart attack and stroke, aid with weight loss, protect
the bones, prevent tooth loss, boost the immune system, help
battle cancer, soothe the digestive system, and relax the body.
Habitual tea drinkers are also less likely to die prematurely.
Habitual tea drinkers drink the beverage at least three times a
week. Green tea seems to have more health benefits than black tea.

May 21: National Waiters And Waitresses
Day (National Waitstaff Day): -- Just for a minute, think about
all the people who serve you food and drinks: the barista that
remembers just how you like your incredibly complicated coffee
drink, the waiter at the sandwich spot who helps sort out all your
large group's orders, the bartender who serves your gin and tonic
with a side of English distillery history. Now put yourself in
their hopefully very comfortable shoes. Yep, that's what we
thought - so today, let's turn the tables, and serve these special
people a super-sized helping of our appreciation. Today is set
aside to celebrate and recognize the value and importance of a
good waiter or waitress. Waitstaff are the difference between a
good experience and a bad one at a restaurant or bar. They are the
face of the restaurant and so should be appreciated. Their total
pay consists of a minimum wage and tips they receive from
customers, which vary. Their minimum wage is generally lower than
the general minimum wage, and tips are meant to be the
compensation. People are encouraged to give better tips to
waitstaff. Waitstaff make our life easier and have been doing that
for far longer than history records. They have no doubt existed in
every form of bar or restaurant. They are an important part of the
experience of having a meal out, and in homes that can afford
them, they are equally important to things as simple as the family
dinner. If you've been to a restaurant before, you know there's
just something about having a skilled Waiter that can give you an
amazing experience. They go out of their way, despite whatever
challenges they might be having in their personal or work life to
make sure you have a wonderful experience, thus turning you into a
regular. The experience they create makes people return to the
establishment and helps the place grow in the process. Waiters and
waitresses make or break a restaurant and so they should be
treated with the utmost respect. National Waiters and Waitresses
Day was created by Fred Sirieix. He thought it was high time to
celebrate all waitstaff, from those in fine restaurants to the
ones in the least exotic ones. Sirieix's goal was to stop people
working as waiters from being perceived as unskilled and instead
as hardworking people doing jobs that require many skills and can
lead to rewarding careers. It was proposed by Sirieix in 2012 and
was first celebrated in 2013. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

May 21: World Diversity Day (World Day
For Cultural Diversity For Dialogue And Development): -- A day set
aside to appreciate the cultural diversities between different
countries, states, and people in the World. This day is of serious
importance as three-quarters of the world's major conflicts have a
cultural dimension. That is a really big slice of the pie being
culture-related. This has led to efforts by the United Nations and
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) to curb this in a bid to achieve one of its major
objectives - bringing peace into the World. According to the
United Nations, three-quarters of the conflict in the World has a
cultural dimension to them. This has been the norm since the
beginning of time, as people tend to favor what they are used to
as opposed to accepting or tolerating something foreign. Over the
years, interventions have been set up to combat this and have
borne some fruit, but it would take the education and intervention
of everybody to achieve 100% tolerance of cultural diversity. Some
of the efforts came with UNESCO's adoption of the Universal
Declaration on Cultural Diversity in 2001 recognizing the need to
"enhance the potential of culture as a means of achieving
prosperity, sustainable development, and global peaceful
coexistence." In December 2002, the U.N. General Assembly, in
its resolution 57/249, declared May 21 to be the World Day for
Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. In 2015, the
Second Committee of the U.N. General Assembly adopted the
resolution on Culture and Sustainable Development to further
contribute to cultural diversity as it stated that sustainable
development can best be achieved by drawing upon the creative
potential of the world's diverse cultures and engaging in
continuous dialogue to ensure that all members of society benefit
from it. World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and
Development presents an occasion to deepen our understanding of
cultural diversity, promote it and highlight its significance as
an agent of inclusion and positive change. It should be celebrated
by all in the world as accepting each other's differences is one
of the most important ways to bring peace between people,
countries, and the world at large. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

May 21: Talk Like Yoda Day: -- An
opportunity for die-hard Yoda fans to honor the day we first met
the wisest little green guy in the galaxy. Yoda is one of the most
memorable movie characters in history. It's not only the wise
things Yoda says but how he says them that makes his character
such an iconic piece of pop culture. The master Jedi's unique
appearance and mysterious background make him one of the most
interesting characters in the entire Star Wars universe, and with
Disney Plus' newest hit, "Mandalorian," Yoda lovers are
growing every day. Talk Like Yoda Day celebrates the anniversary
release of "Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back,"
where fans first meet Yoda in the swamps of the planet Dagobah. He
famously trains Luke Skywalker to become a Jedi in order to defeat
the malevolent ruler of the empire, Darth Vader, who is his
father. Yoda breaks hearts everywhere when he dies in the
following movie, but his legacy continues. Following a long
hiatus, the Star Wars saga released a new prequel trilogy which
features the younger Yoda. One of the few saving graces of the
largely resented trilogy was the fight scenes in "Episode II:
Attack of the Clones" when Yoda flexed his Jedi skills more
than we've seen in any of the other live-action movies. Yoda had a
number of important positions, including Grand Master of the Jedi
High Council, Master of the Jedi Order, and general during the
Clone Wars. Other than that, Yoda's backstory is full of mystery -
very few of his species exist - and we don't even know what planet
he is from. However, he is said to be the oldest, wisest, and most
powerful Jedi in the Star Wars universe. Yoda's character shines
through his actions and values and we love him all the same.
Today, 40 years after Yoda graced the Star Wars universe, people
are still naming their pets and bulldogs after him. And, of
course, switching around their sentence structures to speak just
like him on National Talk Like Yoda Day. On Sale @ 15% Off

May 21: World Meditation Day: -- This
holiday seeks to create awareness about meditation and its
benefits, especially in our busy world of constant movement.
Meditation itself is a practice that has been traced to ancient
times, as far back as 3000 B.C., when it was referenced in ancient
Indian texts. It also has roots in third-century China. The
practice includes using techniques such as mindfulness or focusing
on an object, thought, or activity to achieve an emotionally calm
and stable state. Today, meditation has transcended past
stereotypes and entered mainstream culture in the West. The
practice of meditation traces its roots to around 3000 B.C.
However, some scholars proffer that meditation may be as old as
humanity itself, stating that even the Neanderthals might have had
meditative capacities. Derived from the Latin word 'meditatum,'
meditation refers to a technique or set of techniques that
individuals use to attain a heightened sense of awareness and
focus on reaching a calm and stable state, mentally and
emotionally. Meditation can be firmly traced back to 1500 B.C.
India, where old records reference the practice of 'jhana' or
'dhyana,' or training of the mind. These records are said to
originate from the Hindu tradition of 'Vedantism.' Meditation also
has roots in ancient China, as far back as the third and sixth
centuries, with the writings of Laozi, an ancient Chinese
philosopher. He used several terms similar to the meditation
techniques used in later centuries in his works. Some of these
terms include 'Shou Zhong,' meaning "guarding the middle"
and 'Bao Yi,' which translates to "embracing the one."
Despite these connections to China and India, it is difficult to
trace the exact origin of meditation because it is practiced in
multiple cultures and religions like Christianity, Islam, and
Judaism. These have all influenced what meditation is today.
Meditation didn't creep into Western culture until the 20th
century. In the 1960s, Harvard Medical School professor, Herbert
Benson, began to study the scientific aspect of meditation,
finding that people who meditated used 17% less oxygen than
others. In the 1990s, meditation began to be viewed as trendy in
the United States, especially with celebrities joining the trend.
Now, about 9.3 million adults in the U.S. use meditation annually.

May 21 - June 21 (2021): Solar Zodiacal
Transits: -- Gemini (Latin: "Twins"), the third
astrological sign in the Zodiac, is entered by the Earth's Sun,
which will transit the sign until June 21, according to the
tropical zodiacal system. The ruler of the sign of Gemini is
Mercury, and the North Node of the Moon is in its exaltation;
Jupiter is in its detriment, and the South Node of the Moon is in
its fall. Gemini is one of the triplicity of astrological signs of
the element of air, and as such a positive sign, it is an active,
yang, masculine sign as one of the six odd-numbered signs of the
zodiac - Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius -
all signs which constitute the fire and air triplicities. Gemini
is one of the four mutable astrological signs, signs assigned to
the end of one of the four seasons, and as such, Gemini marks the
end of spring in the northern hemisphere, and the end of fall in
the southern hemisphere. Mutable signs are associated with
adaptability, flexibility and sympathy. These signs mediate change
and change their modes of expression frequently in order to meet
this end, and they are often described as being diplomatic and
assisting others through transitions. On the other hand, due to
their dualistic behavior, they can often be inconsistent,
uncommitted and come off as unreliable. Gemini spans 60 dg to 90
dg of celestial longitude. Under the tropical zodiac, the sun
transits this area between May 21 and June 21 in 2021. In sidereal
astrology, the Sun currently transits the constellation of Gemini
from May 14 and June 15 in 2021. The sign of Gemini is associated
with the twins Castor and Pollux in Greek mythology. Castor and
Pollux (or in Greek, Polydeukes) are twin half-brothers in Greek
and Roman mythology, known together as the Dioscuri. Their mother
was Leda, but they had different fathers; Castor was the mortal
son of Tyndareus, the king of Sparta, while Pollux was the divine
son of Zeus, who seduced Leda in the guise of a swan. The pair are
thus an example of heteropaternal superfecundation (twins from
separate ova from the same mother, but with different fathers).
Though accounts of their birth are varied, they are sometimes said
to have been born from an egg, along with their twin sisters Helen
of Troy and Clytemnestra. In Latin the twins are also known as the
Gemini (literally "twins") or Castores, as well as the
Tyndaridae or Tyndarids. Pollux asked Zeus to let him share his
own immortality with his twin to keep them together, and they were
transformed into the constellation Gemini. The pair were regarded
as the patrons of sailors, to whom they appeared as St. Elmo's
fire, and were also associated with horsemanship due to their
myth's ultimate origination with the Horse Twins of
Proto-Indo-European mythology, who were youthful gods or demigods
who served as rescuers and healers. Like other figures found in
Indo-European myths, the Divine Twins are not directly attested to
by archaeological or written materials, but scholars of
comparative mythology and Indo-European studies generally agree on
the motif they have reconstructed by way of the comparative
method. The Knights Templar Seal shows two knights sharing the
same horse. There are many interpretations of the symbolism of
this seal. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

Durer, painter, engraver, printmaker, mathematician and theorist
of the German Renaissance (d. April 6, 1528) is #born in
Nuremberg, Free Imperial City of Nuremberg, Holy Roman Empire
(modern Germany). Durer established his reputation and influence
across Europe when he was still in his twenties due to his
high-quality woodcut prints. He was in communication with the
major Italian artists of his time, including Raphael, Giovanni
Bellini and Leonardo da Vinci, and from 1512 he was patronized by
emperor Maximilian I. Durer is commemorated by both the Lutheran
and Episcopal Churches. Durer's vast body of work includes
engravings, his preferred technique in his later prints,
altarpieces, portraits and self-portraits, watercolours and books.
The woodcuts, such as the Apocalypse series (1498), are more
Gothic than the rest of his work. His well-known engravings
include the Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513), Saint Jerome in
his Study (1514) and Melencolia I (1514), which has been the
subject of extensive analysis and interpretation. His watercolours
also mark him as one of the first European landscape artists,
while his ambitious woodcuts revolutionized the potential of that
medium. Durer's introduction of classical motifs into Northern
art, through his knowledge of Italian artists and German
humanists, has secured his reputation as one of the most important
figures of the Northern Renaissance. This is reinforced by his
theoretical treatises, which involve principles of mathematics,
perspective, and ideal proportions. Albrecht Durer died in
Nuremberg, the city of his birth, possibly as a result of a
malarial infection contracted in 1521 when he went to Zeeland in
the hopes of seeing a stranded whale, at the age of 56, leaving an
estate valued at the considerable sum of 6,874 florins. He is
buried in the Johannisfriedhof cemetery. His large house
(purchased in 1509 from the heirs of the astronomer Bernhard
Walther), where his workshop was located and where his widow lived
until her death in 1539, remains a prominent Nuremberg landmark.

Felipe Habsburg II to Emperor Charles V, who was also king of
Castile and Aragon, and Isabella of Portugal, in Valladolid , the
capital of The Crown Of Castile, at The Palacio De Pimentel, which
was owned by Don Bernardino Pimentel. From 1555, Philip was lord
of the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands. His empire included
territories on every continent then known to Europeans, including
his namesake the Philippines. During his reign, Spain reached the
height of its influence and power. This is sometimes called the
Spanish Golden Age. The expression, "the empire on which the
sun never sets," was coined during Philip's time to reflect
the extent of his dominion. During Philip's reign there were
separate state bankruptcies in 1557, 1560, 1569, 1575, and 1596.
This was partly the cause of the Declaration Of Independence that
created the Dutch Republic in 1581. A devout Catholic, Philip is
also known for organising a naval expedition against Protestant
England in 1588, the Spanish Armada, which was unsuccessful,
mostly due to storms and serious logistical problems. Philip was
described by the Venetian ambassador Paolo Fagolo in 1563 as
"slight of stature and round-faced, with pale blue eyes,
somewhat prominent lip, and pink skin, but his overall appearance
is very attractive." The Ambassador went on to say "He
dresses very tastefully, and everything that he does is courteous
and gracious.". King Philip II died of cancer at the age of
71 in El Escorial, near Madrid. He is buried at the Royal Site Of

Awards And Decorations Of The Russian Empire: Orders Of Chivalry
(Orders Of Knighthood, Chivalric Orders, Equestrian Orders):
Orders Of Chivalry Of The Russian Empire: The Order Of Saint
Alexander Nevsky (The Imperial Order Of Saint Alexander Nevsky):
-- Empress Of Russia Catherine I institutes the chivalric order of
The Order of St. Alexander Nevsky. Envisioned by her husband
Emperor Peter I for rewarding military bravery in battle, he died
before he could create the order. It was established by Empress
Catherine I in memory of the deeds of Saint Alexander Nevsky,
patron Saint of the Russian capital of Saint Petersburg, for
defending Russia against foreign invaders. The order was
originally awarded to distinguished Russian citizens who had
served their country with honor, mostly through political or
military service. It was first awarded on the occasion of the
wedding of Grand Duchess Anna Petrovna of Russia and Charles
Frederick, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp in 1725. A dozen guests
received the reward, and the order quickly fell far behind The
Order Of Saint Andrew and The Order Of Saint Catherine in
prestige. The Empress Catherine complained about the situation and
by September 1725, she took it upon herself to determine who would
receive the award. The Order Of Saint Alexander was granted the
highest esteem and was not usually bestowed upon people below the
rank of Lieutenant-General or an equal political status. It also
granted hereditary nobility. Additionally it was bestowed on
foreign monarchs, including Polish King Augustus II the Strong and
King Frederick IV of Denmark-Norway. The combined number of
honorees spanning the years 1725 to 1917 totaled 3,674. The Order
Of Saint Alexander Nevsky was abolished after the 1917 Russian
Revolution, along with all other orders and titles of the Russian
Empire. In 1942, the Soviet Union revived the order as a purely
military decoration as a military honour by The Decree Of The
Presidium Of The Supreme Soviet Of The USSR Of July 7, 1942 during
World War II with the more secular name of The Order Of Alexander
Nevsky. Its statute was amended by Decree of the Presidium of the
Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 26, 1947 and bestowed to
civil servants for twenty years or more of highly meritorious
service. The Order was retained by the new Russian Federation
following the dissolution of the USSR by Decision of the Supreme
Soviet of the Russian Federation 2557-I of March 20, 1992 but was
never awarded. The September 7, 2010 Decree 1099 of the President
of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin redesigned the badge of
the Order closer to pre-1917 imperial model and amended the
statute of the Order making it a purely civilian award. The
original Order Of Saint Alexander Nevsky continued to be bestowed
by the heads of The House Of Romanov after the 1917 Russian
Revolution. As of 2024, Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, a
pretender to the Russian throne and to the headship of the Russian
Imperial House, continues to award a Russian Imperial Order of
Saint Alexander Nevsky as a dynastic order of knighthood. These
actions are disputed by some members of the Romanov family. On

Julien Felix Rousseau in Laval, Mayenne, France, in 1844 into the
family of a tinsmith, where he was forced to work as a young
child. He attended Laval High School as a day student, and then as
a boarder after his father became a debtor and his parents had to
leave the town upon the seizure of their house. Though mediocre in
some of his high school subjects, Rousseau won prizes for drawing
and music. After high school, he worked for a lawyer and studied
law, but "attempted a small perjury and sought refuge in the
army." He served four years, starting in 1863. With his
father's death, Rousseau moved to Paris in 1868 to support his
widowed mother as a government employee. In 1868, he married
Clemence Boitard, his landlord's 15-year-old daughter, with whom
he had six children (only one survived). In 1871, he was appointed
as a collector of the octroi of Paris, collecting taxes on goods
entering Paris. His wife died in 1888 and he married Josephine
Noury in 1898. From 1886, he exhibited regularly in the Salon des
Independants, and, although his work was not placed prominently,
it drew an increasing following over the years. Tiger in a
Tropical Storm (Surprised!) was exhibited in 1891, and Rousseau
received his first serious review when the young artist Felix
Vallotton wrote: "His tiger surprising its prey ought not to
be missed; it's the alpha and omega of painting." Yet it was
more than a decade before Rousseau returned to depicting his
vision of jungles. In 1893, Rousseau moved to a studio in
Montparnasse where he lived and worked until his death in 1910. In
1897, he produced one of his most famous paintings, La Bohemienne
endormie (The Sleeping Gypsy). In 1905, Rousseau's large jungle
scene The Hungry Lion Throws Itself on the Antelope was exhibited
at the Salon des Independants near works by younger leading
avant-garde artists such as Henri Matisse, in what is now seen as
the first showing of The Fauves. Rousseau's painting may even have
influenced the naming of the Fauves. In 1907, he was commissioned
by artist Robert Delaunay's mother, Berthe, Comtesse de Delaunay,
to paint The Snake Charmer. When Pablo Picasso happened upon a
painting by Rousseau being sold on the street as a canvas to be
painted over, the younger artist instantly recognised Rousseau's
genius and went to meet him. In 1908, Picasso held a half serious,
half burlesque banquet in his studio at Le Bateau-Lavoir in
Rousseau's honour. Le Banquet Rousseau, "one of the most
notable social events of the twentieth century," wrote
American poet and literary critic John Malcolm Brinnin, "was
neither an orgiastic occasion nor even an opulent one. Its
subsequent fame grew from the fact that it was a colorful
happening within a revolutionary art movement at a point of that
movement's earliest success, and from the fact that it was
attended by individuals whose separate influences radiated like
spokes of creative light across the art world for generations."
Guests at the banquet Rousseau included: Guillaume Apollinaire,
Jean Metzinger, Juan Gris, Max Jacob, Marie Laurencin, Andre
Salmon, Maurice Raynal, Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler, Leo Stein, and
Gertrude Stein. Maurice Raynal, in Les Soirees de Paris, 15
January 1914, p. 69, wrote about "Le Banquet Rousseau".
Years later the French writer Andre Salmon recalled the setting of
the illustrious banquet: "Here the nights of the Blue Period
passed... here the days of the Rose Period flowered... here the
Demoiselles d'Avignon halted in their dance to re-group themselves
in accordance with the golden number and the secret of the fourth
dimension... here fraternized the poets elevated by serious
criticism into the School of the Rue Ravignan... here in these
shadowy corridors lived the true worshippers of fire ... here one
evening in the year 1908 unrolled the pageantry of the first and
last banquet offered by his admirers to the painter Henri Rousseau
called the Douanier." After Rousseau's retirement in 1893, he
supplemented his small pension with part-time jobs and work such
as playing a violin in the streets. He also worked briefly at Le
petit Journal, where he produced a number of its covers. An
equally famous work by Rousseau, included in the collection of
John Hay Whitney, is Tropical Forest with Monkeys, which was
painted during the last months of his life. It shows one of his
signature exotic landscapes, lush, tropical, and virgin. Many of
the animals in Rousseau's images have human faces or attributes.
The central monkeys in this painting hold green sticks from which
strings appear to dangle, suggesting fishing poles and human
leisure activities, thereby emphasizing the quasi-human experience
of the animals. In this sense Rousseau's anthropomorphized
primates can be seen not as true wild beasts, but rather as
representing an escape from the "jungle" of Paris and
the everyday grind of civilized life. Rousseau exhibited his final
painting, The Dream, in March 1910, at the Salon des Independants.
It is currently on display at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York
City. In the same month, Rousseau suffered a phlegmon in his leg,
one which he ignored. In August, when he was admitted to the
Necker Hospital in Paris where his son had died, he was found to
have gangrene in his leg. After an operation, he died there from a
blood clot, aged 66. He is buried at The Parisian Cemetery of
Bagneux, France. At his funeral, seven friends stood at his grave:
the painters Paul Signac and Manuel Ortiz de Zarate; the artist
couple Robert Delaunay and Sonia Terk; the sculptor Constantin
Brancusi; Rousseau's landlord Armand Queval, and Guillaume
Apollinaire, who wrote the epitaph Brancusi put on the tombstone:
========= "We salute you Gentle Rousseau you can hear us.
Delaunay, his wife, Monsieur Queval and myself. Let our luggage
pass duty free through the gates of heaven. We will bring you
brushes, paints and canvas. That you may spend your sacred leisure
in the light and Truth of Painting. As you once did my portrait
facing the stars, lion and the gypsy." On Sale @ 15% Off

(German: Deutsche Einigung): The Franco-Prussian War (The
Franco-German War, The War Of 1870): The Siege Of Paris (The Siege
Of Paris 1870-1871): The Paris Commune (March 18 - May 28, 1871:
Bloody Week (French: Semaine Sanglante): -- French troops invade
the Paris Commune and engage its residents in street fighting,
beginning Bloody Week; by the close of Bloody Week, some 20,000
communards had been killed and 38,000 arrested. The Paris Commune
(French: Commune de Pari) was a French revolutionary government
that seized power in Paris from March 18 to May 28, 1871. During
the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, the French National Guard had
defended Paris, and working-class radicalism grew among its
soldiers. Following the establishment of the Third Republic in
September 1870 (under French chief executive Adolphe Thiers from
February 1871) and the complete defeat of the French Army by the
Germans by March 1871, soldiers of the National Guard seized
control of the city on March 18. They killed two French army
generals and refused to accept the authority of the Third
Republic, instead attempting to establish an independent
government. The Commune governed Paris for two months,
establishing policies that tended toward a progressive,
anti-religious system of social democracy, including the
separation of church and state, self-policing, the remission of
rent, the abolition of child labor, and the right of employees to
take over an enterprise deserted by its owner. All the Roman
Catholic churches and schools were closed. Feminist, socialist,
communist and anarchist currents played important roles in the
Commune. However, the various Communards had little more than two
months to achieve their respective goals. The national French Army
suppressed the Commune at the end of May during La semaine
sanglante ("The Bloody Week") beginning on 21 May 1871.
The national forces killed in battle or quickly executed between
10,000 and 15,000 Communards, though one unconfirmed estimate from
1876 put the toll as high as 20,000. In its final days, the
Commune executed the Archbishop of Paris, Georges Darboy, and
about one hundred hostages, mostly gendarmes and priests. 43,522
Communards were taken prisoner, including 1,054 women. More than
half were quickly released. Fifteen thousand were tried, 13,500 of
whom were found guilty. Ninety-five were sentenced to death, 251
to forced labor, and 1,169 to deportation (mostly to New
Caledonia). Thousands of other Commune members, including several
of the leaders, fled abroad, mostly to England, Belgium and
Switzerland. All the prisoners and exiles received pardons in 1880
and could return home, where some resumed political careers.
Debates over the policies and outcome of the Commune had
significant influence on the ideas of Karl Marx (1818-1883) and
Friedrich Engels (1820-1895), who described it as the first
example of the dictatorship of the proletariat. Engels wrote: "Of
late, the Social-Democratic philistine has once more been filled
with wholesome terror at the words: Dictatorship of the
Proletariat. Well and good, gentlemen, do you want to know what
this dictatorship looks like? Look at the Paris Commune. That was
the Dictatorship of the Proletariat." On Sale @ 15% Off

Hammond Curtiss began his career as a bicycle racer and builder
before moving on to motorcycles. As early as 1904, he began to
manufacture engines for airships. In 1908, Curtiss joined the
Aerial Experiment Association, a pioneering research group,
founded by Alexander Graham Bell at Beinn Bhreagh, Nova Scotia, to
build flying machines. Curtiss made the first officially witnessed
flight in North America, won a race at the world's first
international air meet in France, and made the first long-distance
flight in the United States. His contributions in designing and
building aircraft led to the formation of the Curtiss Aeroplane
and Motor Company, now part of Curtiss-Wright Corporation. His
company built aircraft for the U.S. Army and Navy, and, during the
years leading up to World War I, his experiments with seaplanes
led to advances in naval aviation. Curtiss civil and military
aircraft were predominant in the interwar and World War II eras.
Although his formal education extended only to eighth grade, his
early interest in mechanics and inventions was evident at his
first job at the Eastman Dry Plate and Film Company (later Eastman
Kodak Company) in Rochester, New York. He invented a stencil
machine adopted at the plant and later built a rudimentary camera
to study photography. Glenn Curtiss died of complications from an
appendectomy in Buffalo, New York, aged 52; traveling to Rochester
to contest a lawsuit brought by former business partner August
Herring, Curtiss suffered an attack of appendicitis in court. His
funeral service was held at St. James Episcopal Church in his home

#born Raymond William Stacy Burr in New Westminster, British
Columbia, Canada. He is primarily known for his title roles in the
television dramas Perry Mason and Ironside. He was prominently
involved in multiple charitable endeavors, such as working on
behalf of the United Service Organizations. Burr's early acting
career included roles on Broadway, radio, television and in film,
usually as the villain. He had a regular role in Jack Webb's first
radio show, Pat Novak for Hire (1949), and in Dragnet (1949-50) he
played Joe Friday's boss, Ed Backstrand, chief of detectives. Burr
worked on other Los Angeles-based series including Suspense,
Screen Directors Playhouse, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, Family
Theater, Hallmark Playhouse and Hallmark Hall of Fame. He
performed in five episodes of the experimental dramatic radio
anthology series CBS Radio Workshop, and had what is arguably his
best radio role in "The Silent Witness" (1957), in which
his is the only voice. In 1956 Burr was the star of CBS Radio's
Fort Laramie, an adult Western drama produced, written and
directed by the creators of Gunsmoke. He played the role of Lee
Quince, captain of the cavalry, in the series set at a post-Civil
War military post where disease, boredom, the elements and the
uncharted terrain were the greatest enemies of "ordinary men
who lived in extraordinary times". The half-hour transcribed
program aired Sundays at 5:30 p.m. ET January 22 - October 28,
1956. Burr told columnist Sheilah Graham that he had received
1,500 fan letters after the first broadcasts, and he continued to
receive letters praising the show's authenticity and presentation
of human dignity. In August 1956, CBS announced that Burr would
star in the television series Perry Mason. Although the network
wanted Burr to continue work on Fort Laramie as well, the TV
series required an extraordinary commitment and the radio show
ended. Known for his loyalty and consciousness of history, Burr
went out of his way to employ his radio colleagues in his
television programs. Some 180 radio celebrities appeared on Perry
Mason during the first season alone. His portrayal of the
suspected murderer in the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Rear Window
(1954) is regarded as his best-known film role. He won two Emmy
Awards, in 1959 and 1961, for the role of Perry Mason, which he
played for nine seasons (1957-1966) and reprised in a series of 26
television films (1985-1993). His second hit TV series, Ironside,
earned him six Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nominations.
Raymond Burr died of cancer in Healdsburg, California, aged 76. He
is buried at Fraser Cemetery in his birth town of New Westminster,
British Columbia, Canada. After Burr's death from cancer in 1993,
his personal life came into question, as many details of his known
biography appeared to be unverifiable. In 1996, Burr was listed as
one of the 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time by TV Guide. A 2014
study found that Burr was rated as the favorite actor by Netflix
users, with the greatest number of dedicated microgenres. On Sale

as their second trial begins in the Norfolk County Courthouse in
Dedham, located on the southwest border of Boston, Massachusetts
for the murder of two security guards during a robbery in South
Braintree, Massachusetts. On May 5, 1920, authorities arrested
Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti for alleged robbery and
murder. They were later convicted of murdering a guard and a
paymaster during the April 15, 1920 armed robbery of the Slater
and Morrill Shoe Company in Braintree, Massachusetts, United
States. They were executed in the electric chair seven years later
at Charlestown State Prison. Both men adhered to an anarchist
movement that advocated relentless warfare against a violent and
oppressive government. A series of appeals followed, funded
largely by the private Sacco And Vanzetti Defense Committee. The
appeals were based on recanted testimony, conflicting ballistics
evidence, a prejudicial pre-trial statement by the jury foreman,
and a confession by an alleged participant in the robbery. All
appeals were denied by trial judge Webster Thayer and also later
denied by the Massachusetts State Supreme Court. By 1926, the case
had drawn worldwide attention. As details of the trial and the
men's suspected innocence became known, Sacco And Vanzetti became
the center of one of the largest causes celebres in modern
history. In 1927, protests on their behalf were held in every
major city in North America and Europe, as well as in Tokyo,
Sydney, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Johannesburg.
Celebrated writers, artists, and academics pleaded for their
pardon or for a new trial. Harvard law professor and future
Supreme Court justice Felix Frankfurter argued for their innocence
in a widely read Atlantic Monthly article that was later published
in book form. Sacco And Vanzetti were scheduled to die in April
1927, accelerating the outcry. Responding to a massive influx of
telegrams urging their pardon, Massachusetts governor Alvan T.
Fuller appointed a three-man commission to investigate the case.
After weeks of secret deliberation that included interviews with
the judge, lawyers, and several witnesses, the commission upheld
the verdict. Sacco And Vanzetti were executed in the electric
chair just after midnight on August 23, 1927. Subsequent riots
destroyed property in Paris, London, and other cities. On Sale @

USS Yorktown (CV-5), an aircraft carrier that served in the United
States Navy during World War II, is laid down at Newport News,
Virginia, by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. It
was launched on April 4, 1936, sponsored by Eleanor Roosevelt, and
commissioned at the Naval Station Norfolk (NS Norfolk), Norfolk,
Virginia on September 30, 1937, with Captain Ernest D. McWhorter
in command. Named after the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, she was
the lead ship of the Yorktown class, which was designed on the
basis of lessons learned from operations with the converted
battlecruisers of the Lexington class and the smaller
purpose-built USS Ranger. Yorktown was at port in Norfolk during
the attack on Pearl Harbor, having just completed a patrol of the
Atlantic Ocean. She then sailed to San Diego in late December 1941
and was incorporated as the flagship of Task Force 17. Together
with the carrier Lexington, she successfully attacked Japanese
shipping off the east coast of New Guinea in early March 1942. Her
aircraft sank or damaged several warships supporting the invasion
of Tulagi in early May. Yorktown rendezvoused with Lexington in
the Coral Sea and attempted to stop the invasion of Port Moresby,
Papua New Guinea. They sank the light aircraft carrier Shoho on
May 7, during the Battle of the Coral Sea, but did not encounter
the main Japanese force of the carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku until
the next day. Aircraft from Lexington and Yorktown badly damaged
Shokaku, but the Japanese aircraft critically damaged Lexington
(which was later scuttled), and damaged Yorktown. Despite the
damage suffered, Yorktown was able to return to Hawaii. Although
estimates were that the damage would take two weeks to repair,
Yorktown put to sea only 72 hours after entering drydock at Pearl
Harbor, which meant that she was available for the next
confrontation with the Japanese. Yorktown played an important part
in the Battle of Midway in early June. Yorktown's aircraft played
crucial roles in sinking two Japanese fleet carriers. Yorktown
also absorbed both Japanese aerial counterattacks at Midway which
otherwise would have been directed at the carriers USS Enterprise
and Hornet. On June 4, during the Battle of Midway, Japanese
aircraft crippled Yorktown. She lost all power and developed a
23-degree list to port. Salvage efforts on Yorktown were
encouraging, and she was taken in tow by USS Vireo. In the late
afternoon of 6 June, the Japanese submarine I-168 fired a salvo of
torpedoes, two of which struck Yorktown, and a third sinking the
destroyer USS Hammann, which had been providing auxiliary power to
Yorktown. With further salvage efforts deemed hopeless, the
remaining repair crews were evacuated from Yorktown, which sank on
the morning of June 7. The wreck of Yorktown was located in May
1998 by Robert Ballard. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight

May 21, 1941: #BOTD: #HBD! Ronald Isley,
African American singer, songwriter, record producer and actor,
lead singer and founding member of the musical group The Isley
Brothers, is #born. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, the group
started as a vocal trio consisting of brothers O'Kelly Isley Jr.,
Rudolph Isley and Ronald Isley in the 1950s. With a career
spanning over seven decades, the group has been cited as having
enjoyed one of the "longest, most influential, and most
diverse careers in the pantheon of popular music". Together
with a fourth brother, Vernon, the group performed gospel music
until Vernon's death a few years after its formation. After moving
to the New York City area in the late 1950s, the group had their
first successes during these early years, first coming to
prominence in 1959 with their fourth single, "Shout",
written by the three brothers. Initially a modest charted single,
the song eventually sold over a million copies. In the 1960s, the
group recorded songs for a variety of labels, including the top 20
single "Twist and Shout" and the Motown single "This
Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)", before recording and
issuing the Grammy Award-winning hit "It's Your Thing"
on their own label, T-Neck Records. Influenced by gospel and
doo-wop music, the group began experimenting with different
musical styles incorporating elements of rock and funk as well as
pop balladry. The inclusion of younger brothers Ernie Isley (lead
guitar, drums) and Marvin Isley (bass guitar), and Rudolph's
brother-in-law Chris Jasper (keyboards, synthesizers), in 1973
turned the original vocal trio into a complete band and reached
the height of their success. For the next full decade, they
recorded a string of top-selling albums from 3 + 3 to Between the
Sheets, including the number one album The Heat Is On. The
six-member band splintered in 1983, with Ernie, Marvin, and Chris
Jasper forming the short-lived spinoff group Isley-Jasper-Isley.
The oldest member, O'Kelly, died in 1986 and Rudolph and Ronald
released a pair of albums as a duo before Rudolph retired to a
life in the Christian ministry in 1989. Ronald reconvened the
group two years later in 1991 with Ernie and Marvin; five years
later, in 1996, Marvin Isley left the group due to complications
of diabetes. The remaining duo of Ronald and Ernie achieved
mainstream success with the albums Mission to Please (1996),
Eternal (2001) and Body Kiss (2003). Eternal spawned the top
twenty hit "Contagious". As of 2019, the Isley Brothers
continue to perform under the lineup of Ronald and Ernie. The
Isley Brothers have sold over 18 million units in the United
States alone. They have had several hit songs including four Top
10 singles on the United States Billboard chart. With their first
major hit charting in 1959 ("Shout"), and their last one
in 2001 ("Contagious"), they are among the few groups
ever to have hit the Billboard Hot 100 with new music in five
different decades. Sixteen of their albums charted in the Top 40
and thirteen of those albums have been certified gold, platinum or
multi-platinum by the RIAA. The brothers have been honored by
several musical institutions, including the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame, which inducted them in 1992.Five years later, they were
added to Hollywood's Rockwalk, and in 2003 they were inducted to
the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. They received the Grammy Lifetime

Alabama Governor John M. Patterson is forced by President Kennedy,
after delays intended by Patterson to inflict maximum harm by
White rioters upon Blacks and Freedom Rider activists, declares
martial law in an attempt to restore order. On that Sunday
evening, more than 1500 people packed into Reverend Ralph
Abernathy's First Baptist Church to honor the Freedom Riders, who
had been savagely with baseball bats and iron pipes by White
rioters, abetted by the local police who allowed the beatings to
go on uninterrupted. Among the speakers were Rev. Martin Luther
King Jr., who had led the 1955-1956 Montgomery bus boycott, Rev.
Fred Shuttlesworth, and James Farmer. Outside, a mob of more than
3,000 white people attacked the black attendees, with a handful of
the United States Marshals Service protecting the church from
assault and fire bombs. With city and state police making no
effort to restore order, the civil rights leaders appealed to the
President for protection. President Kennedy threatened to
intervene with federal troops if the governor would not protect
the people. Governor Patterson forestalled that by finally
ordering the Alabama National Guard to disperse the mob, and the
Guard reached the church in the early morning. The Freedom Riders
were civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the
segregated southern United States in 1961 and subsequent years to
challenge the non-enforcement of the United States Supreme Court
decisions Morgan v. Virginia (1946) and Boynton v. Virginia
(1960), which ruled that segregated public buses were
unconstitutional. The Southern states had ignored the rulings and
the federal government did nothing to enforce them. The first
Freedom Ride left Washington, D.C., on May 4, 1961, and was
scheduled to arrive in New Orleans on May 17. Boynton outlawed
racial segregation in the restaurants and waiting rooms in
terminals serving buses that crossed state lines. Five years prior
to the Boynton ruling, the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC)
had issued a ruling in Sarah Keys v. Carolina Coach Company (1955)
that had explicitly denounced the Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)
doctrine of separate but equal in interstate bus travel. The ICC
failed to enforce its ruling, and Jim Crow travel laws remained in
force throughout the South. The Freedom Riders challenged this
status quo by riding interstate buses in the South in mixed racial
groups to challenge local laws or customs that enforced
segregation in seating. The Freedom Rides, and the violent
reactions they provoked, bolstered the credibility of the American
Civil Rights Movement. They called national attention to the
disregard for the federal law and the local violence used to
enforce segregation in the southern United States. Police arrested
riders for trespassing, unlawful assembly, violating state and
local Jim Crow laws, and other alleged offenses, but often they
first let white mobs attack them without intervention. The
Congress Of Racial Equality (CORE) sponsored most of the
subsequent Freedom Rides, but some were also organized by the
Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). The Freedom
Rides followed dramatic sit-ins against segregated lunch counters
conducted by students and youth throughout the South, and boycotts
of retail establishments that maintained segregated facilities.
The Supreme Court's decision in Boynton supported the right of
interstate travelers to disregard local segregation ordinances.
Southern local and state police considered the actions of the
Freedom Riders to be criminal and arrested them in some locations.
In some localities, such as Birmingham, Alabama, the police
cooperated with Ku Klux Klan chapters and other white people
opposing the actions, and allowed mobs to attack the riders. On

May 21, 1980: Aesthetics: Performing
Arts: Premieres: Film Premieres: -- Star Wars Episode V: The
Empire Strikes Back is released in theaters. The Empire Strikes
Back (also known as Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes
Back) is a 1980 American epic space opera film directed by Irvin
Kershner, with a screenplay by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan,
based on a story by George Lucas. The sequel to Star Wars (1977),
it is the second film in the Star Wars film series and the fifth
chronological chapter of the "Skywalker Saga". Set three
years after the events of Star Wars, the film recounts the battle
between the malevolent Galactic Empire, led by the Emperor, and
the Rebel Alliance, led by Princess Leia. Luke Skywalker trains to
master the Force so he can confront the powerful Sith lord, Darth
Vader. The ensemble cast includes Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford,
Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse,
Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, and Frank Oz. Following the success of
Star Wars, Lucas hired Brackett to write the sequel. Following her
death in 1978, he outlined the whole Star Wars saga and wrote the
next draft himself, before hiring Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
writer Kasdan to enhance his work. To avoid the stress he faced
directing Star Wars, Lucas handed this responsibility to Kershner
and focused on expanding his special effects company Industrial
Light & Magic instead. Filmed from March to September 1979 in
Finse, Norway, and at Elstree Studios in England, The Empire
Strikes Back faced production difficulties, including actor
injuries, illnesses, fires, and problems securing additional
financing as costs rose. Initially budgeted at 8M USD, costs had
risen to 30.5M USD by the project's conclusion. Released on May
21, 1980, the highly anticipated sequel became the
highest-grossing film that year, earning approximately 401.5M USD
worldwide. Unlike its predecessor, Empire was met with mixed
reviews from critics and fans conflicted over its darker and more
mature themes compared to the light-hearted adventure of Star
Wars. Critics praised the puppeteered character Yoda, a diminutive
alien who serves as Luke's teacher, for having expressive features
and characterization. The film was nominated for various awards
and won two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, and a BAFTA, among
others. Subsequent releases have raised the film's worldwide gross
to 538-549 M USD and, adjusted for inflation, it is the
thirteenth-highest-grossing film in the United States and Canada.
In the years since its release, The Empire Strikes Back has been
critically reassessed and is now often regarded as the best film
in the Star Wars series and among the greatest films ever made. It
has had a significant impact on filmmaking and popular culture and
is considered an example of a sequel superior to its predecessor.
The climax, in which Vader reveals he is Luke's father, is often
ranked as one of the greatest plot twists in cinema. The film
spawned a variety of merchandise and adaptations, including video
games and a radio play. The United States Library of Congress
selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry in
2010. Return of the Jedi (1983) followed Empire, concluding the
original Star Wars trilogy. Prequel and sequel trilogies that
round out the "Skywalker saga" have since been released.

Carlos on East Falkland, leading immediately to The Battle Of San
Carlos, a battle between aircraft and ships that lasted from May
21-25, 1982. During the night, 3 Commando Brigade along with
attached units of the Parachute Regiment were landed from the
liner SS Canberra and the LPD HMS Fearless. There was very limited
enemy resistance on the ground. The Argentine Army force on site
was a section from the 25th Infantry Regiment named Combat Team
Guemes (Spanish: Equipo de Combate Guemes), or EC Guemes, located
at Fanning Head. After the British fleet was spotted at 02:50, EC
Guemes opened fire with 81mm mortars and two 105mm recoilless
rifles. The British warships replied with naval gunfire, and a
25-man SBS team also returned fire. During the firefight, two
British helicopters, a Sea King and a Gazelle, passed overhead,
and the Argentine troops fired at them with machine guns. The
Gazelle's pilot, Sergeant Andrew Evans - RM, was hit and fatally
injured, but he managed to crash-land the aircraft into the sea.
Evans and the other crewman, Sergeant Edward Candlish, were thrown
out of the aircraft. Argentine troops shot at them for about 15
minutes as they struggled in the water, ignoring orders from their
commanding officer to ceasefire. When the firing ceased, Candlish
managed to drag Evans to shore, where he died. Minutes later, a
second British Gazelle helicopter, following the same route as the
first, was hit by small arms fire from the Argentine platoon and
shot down, killing the crew, Lt. Ken Francis and L/Cpl. Pat
Giffin. The Argentinians eventually retreated from Fanning Head,
abandoning their communications equipment. At least eight members
of another Argentinian platoon who fled the scene were left behind
and captured by the British. Argentine commandos of the 601
Commando Company shot down a GR.3 Harrier on a reconnaissance
mission on Port Howard with a Blowpipe missile. The pilot, Flight
Lieutenant Glover, bailed out, breaking his arm and collar bone in
the process. He was taken prisoner by Argentine soldiers shortly
afterward, and flown to a military hospital in Comodoro Rivadavia,
Argentina. Six Argentine pilots were killed during the operation.
The invasion, part of the overall Operation Corporate, sparked a
strong reply from the Argentine Air Force and Argentine Naval

and ships that lasts from May 21-25, 1982 occurs in the aftermatch
of the British amphibious assault codenamed Operation Sutton on
the shores of San Carlos Water (which became known as "Bomb
Alley"), at Ajax Bay and Port San Carlos, near San Carlos on
East Falkland. In The Battle Of San Carlos, Low-flying land-based
Argentine jet aircraft made repeated attacks on ships of the
British Task Force. It was the first time in history that a modern
surface fleet armed with surface-to-air missiles and with air
cover backed up by STOVL carrier-based aircraft defended against
full-scale air strikes. The British sustained losses and damage
but were able to create and consolidate a beachhead and land
troops. John Nott, British Defence Minister, said during the
batttle "I think the Argentine pilots are showing great
bravery, it would be foolish of me to say anything else." In
spite of the British air defence network, the Argentine pilots
were able to attack their targets but some serious procedural
failures prevented them from getting better results - most
notably, shortcomings of their bomb fuses. Thirteen bombs hit
British ships without detonating. Lord Craig, the retired Marshal
of the Royal Air Force, is said to have remarked: "Six better
fuses and we would have lost". The British warships, although
themselves suffering most of the attacks, were successful in
keeping the strike aircraft away from the landing ships, which
were well inside the bay. With the British troops on Falklands
soil, a land campaign followed until Argentine General Mario
Menendez surrendered to British Major General Jeremy Moore on June
15 in Stanley. The subsonic Harrier jump-jet, armed with the
AIM-9L Sidewinder air-to-air missile, proved capable as an air
superiority fighter. The actions had a profound impact on later
naval practice. During the 1980s most warships from navies around
the world were retrofitted with close-in weapon systems and guns
for self-defence. First reports of the number of Argentine
aircraft shot down by British missile systems were subsequently
revised down. On the first day, May 21, The Argentine Army force
on site was a section from the 25th Infantry Regiment named Combat
Team Guemes (Spanish: Equipo de Combate Guemes). The 62-man unit,
under 1st Lieutenant Carlos Esteban, was dispatched to the area on
May 15 following HMS Alacrity's passage through Falkland Sound. An
outpost with two 81mm mortars and two recoilless 105mm rifles was
established on Fanning Head, in order to watch for amphibious
landings and control the entrance to the Sound. On the night of
the British landings, 19 men under 2nd Lieutenant Roberto Reyes
were manning the outpost, while Esteban and the remainder of the
unit were stationed in Port San Carlos settlement. The British
fleet entered San Carlos during the night and at 02:50 was spotted
by EC Guemes which opened fire with 81mm mortars and two
recoilless 105mm rifles. They were soon engaged by British naval
gunfire and a 25-man SBS team; forced to retreat, they lost their
communications equipment; but they shot down two Gazelle
helicopters with small-arms fire, killing three members of the two
aircrews. The first Gazelle's pilot, Sergeant Andrew Evans, was

following the same route as the first, was raked by machine-gun
fire from the Argentine platoon and shot down, killing the crew,
Lt. Ken Francis and L/Cpl. Pat Giffin. 1st Lt Carlos Daniel
Esteban from EC Guemes informed Goose Green garrison about the
landings at 08:22 (he was finally evacuated by helicopter on 26
May). The Argentine high command at Stanley initially thought that
a landing operation was not feasible at San Carlos and the
operation was a diversion. At 10:00, a COAN Aermacchi MB-339 jet
based on the islands was dispatched to San Carlos on a
reconnaissance flight. In the meantime, the FAA had already
started launching their mainland-based aircraft at 09:00. Four
Pucaras from Goose Green harassed SAS positions that were
directing naval gunfire. Two of the aircraft were shot down by
British forces. Between 10:15 and 17:12, seventeen sorties were
carried out by FAA and COAN. Daggers and A-4Cs of the FAA made
attacks on HMS Antrim, HMS Argonaut, HMS Broadsword, HMS
Brilliant, and HMS Ardent. Sorties of MIIIEA aircraft were used as
diversions as well. While many of the bombs did not explode,
Ardent and Argonaut were hit, sustaining damage and casualties.
Sea Harriers intercepted some of the attackers, destroying 8 FAA
aircraft. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!
